Welcome to the Isle of Wight ARES/RACES Team Page


In Isle of Wight, our primary mission is to provide backup communications support for the Isle of Wight County Emergency Services Department. We have permanent operating positions established in the county Emergency Operations Center as well as pre-positioned stations and permanent antennas at the two primary shelters, Windsor High School and Smithfield Middle School. In addition, we have two “Go-Kit” stations packed in pelican cases which can be deployed into the field at backup shelter locations, staging areas, assembly areas or assigned to Field Teams.

Isle of Wight ARES/RACES Training



LEVEL 1


This is the primary level for those who choose a non-leadership role as well as those new to Amateur Radio or emergency communications.

Required:
  • Obtain Technician class or higher Amateur Radio License
  • Obtain Level 1 Task Book
  • Join IOW ARES/RACES Group
  • Introduction to Isle of Wight ARES/RACES Operations
  • Participate in an ARES® or other emcomm on-air net
Optional:
  • IS-100.c – Introduction to Incident Command System
  • IS-700.b – Introduction to National Incident Mgt. System
  • SKYWARN – Spotter Basic Training (Biennially)
  • ARRL EC-001 Introduction to Emergency Communications
LEVEL 2


This training level builds upon what has been learned in Level 1, and participants in Level 2 may elect to remain at this level based upon the extent of their desired ARES involvement

Required:
  • Complete required and optional elements of Level 1 Task Book
  • IS-200.c – ICS for Single Resource
  • IS- 800.c – National Response Framework, An Introduction
  • Net participation (once per quarter)
  • Program CTCSS tone into an HT
  • Program frequency & offset into radio
  • Write and send an ICS-213 message
Optional / Encouraged:
  • SKYWARN – Spotter Basic Training (Biennially)
  • Public service event participation
  • Simulated Emergency Test or Exercise participation
  • Serve as a net control station/operator
  • Operate a VHF digital messaging station
  • Operate a unit-specific digital VHF or HF station
  • Build a simple dipole antenna
  • Build a Powerpole® adapter cable
  • Solder a PL-259 connector
LEVEL 3


Level 3 prepares the participant to take on ARES Team leadership roles in his/her ARES group or section and to work directly with municipal Emergency Management leaders.

Required:
  • Complete required and optional elements of Level 2 Task Book
  • Complete FEMA Independent Study Professional Development Series: IS-120.c, IS-320.d, IS-235.c, IS-240.b, IS-241.b, IS-242.b, IS-244.b, IS-288.b and IS-2200
  • ARRL EC-016 Public Service & Emergency Communications Mgt
  • Net participation (once per quarter)
  • Public service event participation (annually)
  • Simulated Emergency Test or Exercise participation (bi-annually)
  • Serve as a net control station/operator
  • Present a training session
  • Hold or has held a leadership position in a group
  • Participate in PIO activities (PR-101 counts)
  • Proficient in using ICS forms
  • Operate VHF Digital station in peer-to-peer mode
  • Operate HF Digital mode messaging station
  • Program a tone into an HT
  • Program frequency and offset into a radio

  • SKYWARN – Spotter Basic Training (Biennially)
  • ARRL PR-101 – Public Information Officer Training (EC-015)
  • FEMA AUXCOMM Course
  • IS-300 Incident Command System for Expanding Incidents
  • IS-400 Advanced Incident Command System
  • Hold a General class license or higher
  • EC-001 Course Instructor/Mentor
  • Demonstrate cross-band repeat on a mobile radio (VHF→UHF)
